Expert Tips to Keep Masks from Wrecking Your Skin

Current world events have coined a new term in the world of skincare. Friction and irritation from masks being in constant contact with the skin can lead to breakouts, which have been called maskne. You may not be able to avoid wearing a mask, but you can keep breakouts under control with salon facials and a few expert skincare tips to use at home.

Tip #1: Wash After Each Use

To prevent breakouts from bacteria and dirt buildup, always wash your cloth masks every time you wear them. Since the fabric is in constant contact with your skin you need to make sure it is kept clean and dry to prevent pimples and irritation. If you’re using disposable masks avoid reusing them for the same reason.

Tip #2: Change Masks Often

Moisture from your breath can quickly make your mask damp. The warm, moist, dark environment inside your mask creates a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. By keeping several fresh masks on hand and changing them several times throughout the day will help keep things dry and free from bacteria.

Tip #3: Choose Quality Well-Fitting Masks

A mask that is too loose will rub your skin causing irritation, while a mask that is too tight will create pressure that can lead to skin breakdown. You also want to look at materials when shopping for a mask. Look for natural fibers that are soft and breathable to be gentle on your skin such as cotton or silk.

Tip #4: Maintain Pristine Oral Hygiene

It’s more important than ever to keep your mouth clean when you’re wearing a mask. As you breathe out, small amounts of bacteria escape your nose and mouth and are trapped next to your skin where it can wreak havoc. So next time you’re tempted to reach for a breath mint, reach for a toothbrush instead. A small bottle of an antiseptic mouthwash is great to keep on hand to swish when brushing isn’t possible.

Tip #5: Don’t Skip the Moisturizer

Breakouts aren’t the only mask related skin problem. Fabric rubbing against your skin all day creates friction and sucks moisture from your skin. This will quickly lead to flaky dry skin. Use an oil-free moisturizer as part of your daily routine to keep your skin supple and well-hydrated behind the mask.

Following these tips and keeping a regular routine of salon facials will help maintain a clear complexion despite the masks.
